Dave West

Bio

Dave West is the product owner and CEO at scrum.org. He frequently keynotes major industry conferences and is a widely published author of articles and research reports.

He also is the co-author of two books, The Nexus Framework For Scaling Scrum and Head First Object-Oriented Analysis and Design. He led the development of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) for IBM/Rational. After IBM/Rational, West returned to consulting and managed Ivar Jacobson Consulting for North America.

Then, he was VP and research director of Forrester Research, where he ran the software development and delivery practice. Before joining Scrum.org, he was Chief Product Officer at Tasktop, responsible for product management, engineering, and architecture. As a member of the company’s executive management team, I was also instrumental in growing Tasktop from a services business into a VC-backed product business with a team of almost 100.

To be clear, Dave West, is not an official supporter of Evolved; no support should be assumed. At the same time, we think curious people should be aware of their work.

Schwaber, Ken, Patricia Kong, Kurt Bittner, Dave West, and Scrum.org. “Evidence-Based Management Guide.” Scrum.org, May 7, 2024. https://www.scrum.org/resources/evidence-based-management-guide Description: The 2024 version of the Evidence-Based Management (EBM) Guide from Scrum.org is a comprehensive framework for organizations to measure, manage, and increase the value derived from product delivery. EBM helps organizations improve outcomes, reduce risks, and optimize investments by focusing on empiricism, experimentation, and feedback. The updated guide clarifies the relationship between mission, vision, and strategic goals, and expands on the use of Key Value Areas (Current Value, Unrealized Value, Time to Market, Ability to Innovate) as lenses for improvement. It introduces clearer definitions, improved explanations of the Experiment Loop, and new examples such as employee engagement as a measure. The EBM Guide is intended for leaders, teams, and organizations seeking to make evidence-based decisions and foster continuous improvement under conditions of uncertainty.
